Citation Style ‘JHealthMonit’

As of April 2024, the Journal of Health Monitoring uses the reference style outlined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), as adapted by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for its databases, known as Vancouver or NLM Style.

The Journal of Health Monitoring uses consecutive Arabic numerals for referencing within the text. Reference numbers are provided in square brackets such as in the following example: ‘Caries is one of the most common diseases in childhood and adolescence [1].’ Full references are specified in numerical order in the ‘References’ section. If a reference has seven or more authors or editors, only the first six should be stated, followed by ‘et al.’ Journal titles should be abbreviated according to those found in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) databases.

All available works can be cited in the reference list including accepted manuscripts. Accepted but not yet published manuscripts can be cited as ‘Forthcoming’ followed by the year of submission. When citing preprints, it should be clearly recognizable that it is a preprint, and a permanent identifier such as a DOI must be included in the reference. Unavailable and unpublished work, including manuscripts that have been submitted but not yet accepted, should not be cited. If citation of a submitted but not yet accepted paper is mandatory, it is not included as a reference in the bibliography, but is cited in full in brackets in the text according to the following example: (unpublished results: Author A, Author B, Author C, Author D, Author E, Author F, et al. Title of paper. Submitted to Journal XY). Artificial intelligence cannot be cited as an author.

For use with the reference management software package EndNote, the output style ‘JHealthMonit’ can be downloaded via the link below. For other reference management programmes, we recommend the reference style NLM with adaptations to the specifications described here.

Example formats are listed below. Additional examples can be found in the sample references provided by the NLM (see Related Links). Please make sure to use the format DD.MM.YYYY for dates.
