Social listening – Using social media to address public health issues

Short description of the project

Social media has become an integral part of our lives - a digital place increasingly used as a source of information and for discussion of health-related topics (e.g. during the Covid-19 pandemic). The project „Social listening – Using social media to address public health issues” should help to better understand what issues concern us as a public and society in relation to health. Methods from artificial intelligence can help to automatically analyze large amounts of data in order to react promptly as a health institute, especially during health emergencies, and to provide the public with useful information.

The project addresses the following “Essential Public Health Functions” (EPHS):

  • #1: Assess and monitor population health status, factors that influence health, and community needs and assets.
The project uses social media to better understand the needs of the population when it comes to health-related issues.
  • #3: Communicate effectively to inform and educate people about health, factors that influence it, and how to improve it.
The project develops strategies on how to use findings from the analysis of social media for communication with the population as a public health institute.
