Successful implementation of the second telemedical critical care support unit in Tashkent, Uzbekistan (19 to 25 March and 27 May to 3 June 2021)

ZIG 1, together with ZBS 7, is co-leading a project FUTURE International – Uzbekistan to strengthen clinical management and web-based learning in two hospitals in Tashkent, Uzbekistan using telemedical technology. The project is funded by Corona Global in the framework of the GHPP-programme and runs until 2023.

During two joint RKI-Charité missions to the Republic of Uzbekistan on 19-25 March and 27 May - 3 June 2021, two telemedical intensive care units (tele-ICU) were installed in Tashkent hospitals. The teams, led by ZIG 1, delivered telemedical equipment to the Republican Research Centre for Emergency Medicine (RCCEM) and the Specialized Hospital for Treatment of Patients with COVID-19 Zangiota 1. ZIG 1 closely cooperates with the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan on this project.

Delivered telemedical equipment consisted of special telemedical carts connected to the existing telemedical hub in the Division of Operative Intensive Care Medicine at the Charité hospital. The instalment of a tele-ICU provides an opportunity to conduct regular joint consultations of patients and supports Uzbek colleagues in the treatment of critically ill patients.

Following the initial success of the telemedicine rollout in RCCEM, where a series of webinars and over 100 joint telemedical rounds of nearly 30 patients have been conducted since April, the RKI will support the GIZ to expand the telemedical network in two more regions in the country. The project plans to install two tele-ICUs in the hospitals in Karakalpakstan and Fergana Valley. The initiative's long-term goal is to support the Ministry of Health in establishing a country-wide telemedical network that is crucial in providing high-quality medical care in the country's remote areas.
