The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has been granted by the World Health Organization (WHO) the status of a Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance, Consumption and Health Care-Associated Infections on 1st February 2022.

This WHO Collaborating Centre at the RKI aims to support WHO and its Member States in responding to the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by strengthening surveillance, prevention and control efforts.
Specifically, there are three Terms of Reference for the Collaborating Centre on AMR, Consumption and Health Care-Associated Infections:

  • Upon WHO's request, support WHO’s activities with the continuous overall development and implementation of Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance and Use System (GLASS).
  • Support WHO in its activities of the implementation of integrated antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial use and consumption, and health care-associated infections activities at national level.

The WHO CC for AMR, Consumption and Health Care-Associated Infections is a member of the WHO AMR Surveillance and Quality Assessment Collaborating Centres Network (or WHO AMR Surveillance CC Network). Since 2019 the RKI supports the coordination of the network. The network comprises more than 25 WHO CCs focused on AMR surveillance worldwide and primarily supports Low-and Middle-Income Countries to build capacity to develop and implement AMR surveillance.
