PhD programme 2025 – 2028 at the Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Public Health Research (ZKI-PH)

Date:  06/03/2025

The aim of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Public Health Research (ZKI-PH) at the RKI is to combine the RKI's traditional expertise in the field of infectious and non-communicable disease research with the methods of artificial intelligence. It combines bioinformatics, computational epidemiology, modern data visualisation, and big data and systems analysis with machine learning, artificial intelligence, decision research, and the development of realistic computer simulations in the field of public health research.

The ZKI-PH sees itself as a multi- and cross-disciplinary centre that strategically supports the RKI's advances in public health research, especially across ministerial departments. In collaboration with colleagues from other departments of the RKI, six project ideas for jointly supervised PhD projects with an AI focus have been developed for the fourth cohort of doctoral students (2025 - 2028). The planned start is October 2025. Closing date for applications is 30th April 2025.

Topic overview:

  1. Applying methods of AI/ML for the evaluation of tobacco control interventions
  2. Deep Learning and Mathematical Modeling for Infection Analysis in Human Lung Organoids: A Systems Approach to Viral Replication and Kinetics
  3. The relationship between regional health impacts of climate change and the public discourse on health risks in the media
  4. Privacy-preserving, high-dimensional, synthetic medical data
  5. PhyloInfer - AI-Driven Phylogenetic Tree Reconstruction from Raw Virus Sequencing Data
  6. Dynamic Monitoring of Mobile Genetic Elements with Machine Learning and Explainable Artificial Intelligence
