Nordufer
The historic buildings on Nordufer in Berlin-Wedding, opposite the Charité Campus Virchow-Klinikum, have been the headquarters of the Robert Koch Institute since 1900. In the 1970s, a new laboratory building was set up. The Nordufer site houses, among other things, the institute’s leadership and its staff units, a large part of the administration, parts of the Department of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Method Development, Research Infrastructure and Information Technology (MFI), as well as several project groups. It is also home to the RKI Museum, which includes the mausoleum where the institute’s founder, Robert Koch, is buried, the library, and the listed lecture hall used for events.
Since 2024, the perimeter fencing around the site has been undergoing modernization. In the future, the main gate will be relocated from the main building to a separate building in front of the main entrance, and the museum will have its own dedicated entrance.

Seestraße
At the largest RKI site, in Berlin-Wedding, next to the Charité Campus Virchow-Klinikum, you’ll find the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, the Center for Biological Hazards and Special Pathogens (ZBS), the larger portion of the Method Development, Research Infrastructure and Information Technology (MFI), several units of the Department of Infectious Diseases, and part of the administration.
Starting in 2026, an additional office and laboratory building will be constructed at the Seestraße site. A modern office and lab building with a high-security laboratory (BSL-4) was already completed in 2015. The medium-term goal is to centralize all RKI laboratories at Seestraße.

Gerichtstraße
Since the end of 2024, the new location in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen has replaced the General-Pape-Straße site in Berlin-Tempelhof, which for many years housed the Department of Epidemiology and Health Monitoring. The Gerichtstraße site now accommodates the Department of Epidemiology and Health Monitoring, the Centre for International Health Protection (ZIG), parts of the administration, and the in-house print shop.

During the GDR era, this site housed the Institute for Experimental Epidemiology, which was integrated into the RKI after reunification.
