Umweltmed. Inf. dienst (UMID Info) 3: 5-8.
Background: The aim of the study was to give proof of the very high socio-economic relevance of chronic bronchitis regarding the use of health services (in- and outpatient), ability to perform normal live activities and quality of life. Methods: Based on the data of the most recent German National Health Survey (BGS98), persons with chronic bronchitis are characterized in comparison with non-affected participants. Results: The lifetime prevalence of chronic bronchitis is 6.2 %. Differences in sex, region and smoking status can be observed. Participants with chronic bronchitis show less participation in life activities than those without. They also show high use of health services and have a much lesser quality of life – similar to cancer patients or patients with drug treated diabetes mellitus. Three quarters of persons with chronic bronchitis do not receive specific medication.
